The Shelf — every book you finish becomes a spine, in the order you finished it, in its genre's colour

The Shelf — every book you finish becomes a spine, in the order you finished it, in its genre's colour

What it does

Every book you finish becomes a spine on a shelf.

Most reading trackers give you a table and call it a hobby. This one gives you a bookcase. Put a finished date on a book and it appears as a spine — title running up the side, in its genre's colour — at the right-hand end of the shelf. The table is still there, on its own tab, doing the arithmetic.

A shelf that fills up as the year does.

Forty-eight spine slots across two shelves, standing on a wooden plank. Books appear in the order you finished them, oldest on the left, so the shelf reads like a year. Ten genre colours mean you can see the shape of your reading at a glance — the month you only read fantasy, the run of mysteries in August.

The numbers you actually want.

Books this year, pages this year, your average rating, and how many days a book takes you — with a goal bar underneath. The Year breaks the same books down by month, by genre and by how you rated them, and resets itself on 1 January.

It knows what you are in the middle of.

A book with a start date and no finish date is not on the shelf — it is in your hands. STILL READING shows it with a progress bar you move by typing the page you are on.

What's inside

5 tabs

  • The Shelf — a bookcase of 48 spines, four readouts and a goal bar, STILL READING with progress bars, and a legend of the ten genre colours
  • The Books — 120 rows: title, author, genre, pages, dates, rating, format, and the days and pages-a-day worked out for you
  • The Year — the same books by month, by genre and by rating
  • Start Here — plain-English setup, about three minutes
  • Sample data preloaded so you can see it working, then clear it in seconds

Why this one

Checked, not eyeballed

  • The shelf is drawn out of cells, not a picture — it redraws itself the moment you type a finished date
  • Ten genre colours, three formats, a 1–5 rating, all from dropdowns, so nothing is typed twice
  • No scripts, no permissions to grant — it works on the Google Sheets mobile app
  • 1,879 checks against an independent simulation, including a book read in a single day

Bugs caught before release3

Built natively in Google Sheets. 1,879 checks against an independent Python recomputation, 0 failures. Both sorted ENGINE blocks, all 120 rows of The Books with their computed columns, the four readouts, all 48 spines and their mirror row, the STILL READING lines and every row of The Year are re-derived and compared cell by cell — including a book finished the same day it was started, books finished in a previous year, a book being read, a book on the pile with no dates, an empty month and a rating with no books. Three visual bugs caught: spine titles clipped mid-word at 16px rows (now 20px, 140px of spine, about 25 letters); the goal line was cut off by a five-column merge (now nine); and The Books' PAGE YOU ARE ON header did not fit its column (now ON PAGE).
