The Audit — what a year of your subscriptions costs, and what you could stop spending today

What it does

The number nobody wants to look at, and then the decision.

Everything you pay for on a repeat, converted to what it really costs you per year — whatever it bills at — and then a verdict per row. At the top: what a year of this costs, and what you could stop spending today if you acted on the verdicts you have already written.

One number, and it is bigger than you think.

A $15 streaming service is $186 a year. A $22 weekly box is $1,144. The audit converts every price to a yearly figure whatever it bills at — monthly, yearly, quarterly, weekly — and prints the total across the top of the receipt. Under it: what that is a month, what you could stop spending today, and how many of them you are barely using.

A verdict per row, and it adds up.

Keep, Cut, Downgrade, Not sure. YOU COULD STOP is the sum of acting on your own verdicts — a Cut saves the whole yearly cost, a Downgrade half. It turns a vague intention to cancel something into a figure you can look at.

The shelf tells you at a glance.

Every subscription gets a billing card: what it is, what it costs a year, a meter of how often you actually use it, and a bar across the top in its verdict's colour. Free trials take an amber wash and the word TRIAL so the one about to convert is never the one you forget.

What's inside

4 tabs

  • The Audit — the yearly total on a receipt, three readouts under it, a shelf of 24 billing cards, and the list they are all drawn from
  • By Category — what each kind of thing costs you a year, with its share of the total
  • Start Here — plain-English setup, one sitting
  • Sample data preloaded so you can see it working, then clear it in seconds

Why this one

Checked, not eyeballed

  • Monthly, yearly, quarterly or weekly — every price becomes a yearly figure, so they can finally be compared
  • Cancel something and clear its NEXT BILL date: the row stays as a record and the money stops counting
  • No scripts, no permissions to grant — it works on the Google Sheets mobile app
  • 503 checks against an independent simulation, including a cancelled row and all four billing frequencies

Bugs caught before release3

Built natively in Google Sheets. 503 checks against an independent Python recomputation, 0 failures. Every per-row yearly cost, all four receipt readouts, all 24 cards on the shelf, the whole list with its totals and the entire By Category table are re-derived from the sample data and compared cell by cell, including all four billing frequencies, a bill date already in the past, and a cancelled row that must drop out of every total. Three bugs caught: a cancelled row (a name with the NEXT BILL date cleared) still drew a card reading " a year" with no number, so the card now shows no figure, no meter and CANCELLED for a verdict, with the verdict colours gated on the row being live; the card's verdict edge was a narrow column at B, F and J, which — because the shelf and the list share the same twelve columns — made THE LIST's SUBSCRIPTION, NEXT BILL and A MONTH columns 8px wide and unreadable, so the verdict became a bar across the top of the card instead; and two subscription names still clipped at 122px, so the first column of each card group is now 146px.
